Describe a performance you watched recently.

You should say:

what it was

when you watched it

who you were with

and explain why you watched it

I’d like to describe a performance that I was invited to in Beijing, actually. It was a type of gala show in a big theatre. I can’t remember the nameof the theatre now, it was near Qian men. It was a series of performances justbefore the new year. All of them involved choreography – basically a lot ofpeople dancing together – the entire show lasted about 2 hours and told thestory of a monk and how he came to fall in love with a beautiful young girl. Thelighting was incredible and so were the costumes and the stage sets. In fact, itwas very impressive indeed, and it must have taken a very long time for them torehearse to get to this professional standard. These kinds of large performancesare very popular in China, actually, with dance and group choreography, andacrobatics and elements of martial arts all mixed together. Usually they arecentred around themes of ancient China, too. I quite like these kind ofhistorical themes. I think they can be a great source of inspiration for us.

Part3

1. Are there any traditional cultural performances that are popular inChina?

There are lots, of course. The Chinese really like their culturalperformances actually, both on stage and on the television. Like I was sayingearlier, they like big group formation dancing, themes of ancient China andstories about love between different people of different social classes inhistory. Chinese are proud of their history and most cultural performances arecentred around key periods in Chinese history.

2. What’s the difference between watching performances live and watchingthem on TV?

Well, watching performances live is always more exciting. You’re there inperson, and close to the action. It’s much more exciting and you can also feelthe excitement of the rest of the audience. The only disadvantage is that if youdon’t like the performance you can’t turn it off – you can always turn thetelevision off if you get bored, are not in the mood, or don’t enjoy what you’rewatching.

3. How can children benefit from taking part in these performances?

Children can learn a lot from getting involved in performances. They learna range of skills involving cooperation, teamwork, co-ordination, as well asdance, acting, and being confident on stage in front of a large audience. Showbusiness is a wonderful field for children to get involved in.

4. Should the government provide financial support to promote traditionalperformances?

Yes, I think so. In fact, I think the government already does this quite alot. The show that I went to recently was sponsored by the Haidian municipalgovernment labour bureau, in fact. This kind of thing is quite common, as Chinais trying to revive its traditional culture more and more these years.

Describe a difficult challenge you came across at one time in yourlife.

You should say:

what it was

when you came across this challenge

what you did about it

and explain why you think it was a difficult challenge

Something I faced which I found very challenging actually, was a corporatefinance examination I had to prepare for as part of a business course I wasstudying. I am not very good with numbers actually. And I don’t even likefinance stuff. I had to do the exam as it was part of the course, I couldn’tpass the course without doing this module, so I had no choice. Anyway, Iactually asked for help and had some extra lessons with people who understoodfinance and that was sort of useful. Though to be honest it was really hard tofind a good teacher – most people that are good at finance already have greatjobs and so don’t want or need to spend their free time teaching finance topeople like me! I had to work out a lot of stuff by myself and it was astruggle, to be honest, a real struggle. I don’t have good memories of this atall. I am usually quite good at the things that I do, I mean, I learn fast anddon’t find it that difficult to do academic things or grasp complex ideas. Butwhen it comes to financial stuff or anything related to maths or numbers, mymind seems to get stuck, I even start to panic a little bit, and can’t reallymove forward. Some of this is most certainly a psychological barrier and some ofit is simply a weakness in my mental abilities. I find this very frustrating andannoying, and in preparing for this finance exam, I felt it very strongly. I’mso glad this is over and I don’t have to do another one!

Part3

1. Do you think parents should give their children more challenges?

I think that parents here already put too much pressure on their kids to behonest. I think that children today have enough challenges already and don’tneed more and more imposed upon them by over-zealous parents who are highlycompetitive. I think that parents should be a bit more relaxed and notpressurize kids to constantly do new and challenging things.

2. What challenges do you think children might have to face up to inlife?

Children usually have a lot of pressure in school in all sorts of academicsubjects. They have to be competitive, they have to study hard, they have tolearn to read and write a lot of characters. It’s not easy. These are allchallenges.

3. What is one of the most challenging things for children?

I think middle school examinations. They’re horrible, they’re difficult, and they’re really stressful. I think everyone agrees with this. Verychallenging indeed.
