从这个表格可以看出，《新概念英语》第二册的课文难度基本情况是这样的(以下的参考数据均选自蓝思分级阅读测评体系的官网：www.lexile.com)：

1、第1-24课的课文难度平均值为579L，说明这些课文的难度低于美国当地小学二年级学生的阅读水平(450L-620L)，但是同龄相对阅读能力还是偏弱的。

2、第25-48课的课文难度平均值为798L，说明这些课文的难度基本相当于美国当地小学四年级学生的阅读水平(770L-910L)，其难度与第1-24课相比，一下子提升了一个年龄段的区间差，这也解释了为什么不少学生在进入第二单元学习时，一下子觉得无法适应。

3、第49-72课的课文难度平均值为876L，这个难度相当于美国当地小学五年级学生的阅读水平(860L-980L)，但是同龄相对阅读能力还是偏低的。

4、第73-96课的课文难度平均值为897L，这个难度相当于美国当地小学五年级学生的阅读水平(860L-980L)，但是同龄相对阅读能力也还是偏低的。

相信很多家长、学生或是老师看到这里，也会大松一口气，心想：还好，我们的孩子现在刚好在上小学四年级或五年级，正好适合学习第二册的内容。

然而，事实根本不是这么回事!

为什么?!

因为美国当地小学四年级学生的阅读水平已经相当于我们中国当地高中一年级的水平了，而美国当地小学五年级学生的阅读水平已经相当于我们中国当地高中二、三年级的水平了!

从以上分析看来，如果从阅读角度来看，《新概念英语》第二册的课文难度已经达到了高考英语的水平。然而，我们目前国内的《新概念英语》学习者当中，中小学生已经越来越多，而且其中小学生的比例越来越大，仅仅是小学四、五年级就已经在学习第二册的学生人数在逐年上升，可叹中国学生的英语学习能力有多强，可叹中国学生的英语学习压力有多大!

'To end our special news bulletin,' said the voice of the televisionannouncer, 'we're going over to the macaroni fields of Calabria. Macaroni hasbeen grown in this area for over six hundred years. Two of the leading growers,Giuseppe Moldova and Riccardo Brabante, tell me that they have been expecting asplendid crop this year and harvesting has begun earlier than usual. Here youcan see two workers who, between them, have just finished cutting threecartloads of golden brown macaroni stalks. The whole village has been workingday and night gathering and threshing this year's crop before the Septemberrains. On the right, you can see Mrs. Brabante herself. She has been helping herhusband for thirty years now. Mrs. Brabante is talking to the manager of thelocal factory where the crop is processed. This last scene shows you what willhappen at the end of the harvest: the famous Calabrian macaroni-eatingcompetition! Signor Fratelli, the present champion, has won it every year since1991. The mummy of an Egyptian woman who died in 800 B.C. has just had anoperation. The mummy is that of Shepenmut who was once a singer in the Temple ofThebes. As there were strange marks on the X-ray plates taken of the mummy,doctors have been trying to find out whether the woman died of a rare disease.The only way to do this was to operate. The operation, which lasted for overfour hours, proved to be very difficult because of the hard resin which coveredthe skin. The doctors removed a section of the mummy and sent it to alaboratory. They also found something which the X-ray plates did not show: asmall wax figure of the god Duamutef. This god which has the head of a cow wasnormally placed inside a mummy. The doctors have not yet decided how the womandied. They feared that the mummy would fall to pieces when they cut it open, butfortunately this has not happened. The mummy successfully survived theoperation.
